Manning Open Channel Flow Calculator

Enter channel width, flow depth, slope, and surface roughness to get flow rate through a rectangular open channel.

Flow Rate
m³/s
Velocity
m/s

How this is calculated

Q = (1/n) · A · R^(2/3) · S^(1/2),   R = A/P

When to use this calculator

Manning's equation is the standard tool for sizing drainage channels, culverts, and canals. This calculator assumes a rectangular cross-section — area A = b·y, wetted perimeter P = b + 2y, hydraulic radius R = A/P. For trapezoidal or irregular channels the same equation applies but A, P, and R need to be computed for that specific geometry.
